Kidney stone treatment throught mini PNC method
Dhangadhi, May 22: A hospital run in the private sector here has started treating patients with kidney stones using what is called the ‘Mini PCNN’ technique.
Under this technique the patients need not have to undergo operation for removing the kidney stones, according to doctors at the hospital.
The Nawa Jeevan Hospital, Dhangadhi started this treatment for removing kidney stone for the first time in the far-west region. The Mini PCNN technique involves removing the kidney stone by making a delicate 5 mm incision in the kidney of the patient without having to conduct a major surgery on the patient, said urologist surgeon Dr Sanjaya Khadgi.
A team led by Dr Khadgi successfully performed the PCNN surgery on five patients on Saturday. Treatment using this technique costs between Rs 20 thousand to Rs 70 thousand, depending on the case, the hospital stated. It is believed that with the availability of this service in Dhangadhi the patients from the region will no longer have to go to expensive hospitals in India for removing kidney stones. RSS

Demand for imported furniture on the rise
May 26, 2016- The evolving home and living concept along with the development of modern-style apartment and housing units has led to an increase in the demand for furniture of foreign brands and dealers have reported an annual business growth of 20 percent.
Around 60 percent of the furniture offered in Nepali market are imported, according to Kavindra Joshi, president of Nepal Furniture and Furnishing Association.
“Foreign brands offer a wide variety of choices at competitive prices and are promoted well than domestic products,” said Joshi.
“Moreover, domestic producers face obstacles like power cuts and high cost of raw materials which in turn increase the total cost of production.”
Ashish Syangtang, marketing executive at Furniture Land, said the customers are particularly attracted by quality and design of foreign brands like Ashley, Alder, BOFA and others.
“Currently, BOFA contributes the highest sales in the sofa segment and brands like In Home and ALDER lead the sales in beds and home decor segments,” he said.
Syangtan said such brands are high in demand because they deliver higher comfort and are easy to assemble and move around. “This year, we launched some beds from In Homes and the stock sold out in just three months,” he said.
Furniture Land deals with furniture from foreign brands like, Ashley, BOFA, Paradise, ALDER, In Home and JAS.
Bristol and Wellington sofas of BOFA are more preferred by offices and households. A five-seater Bristol sofa is priced at Rs115,000 and Wellington sofas cost around Rs285,000.
According to a research by Research and Markets, the global bedroom furniture market has been predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.4 percent during the period 2016-2020.
“The global bedroom furniture industry is highly fragmented. It is also labour-intensive and includes craft-based local firms and mass volume producers and retailers. With the emergence of flat-pack and ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture, mass production has become viable, allowing for larger quantities of shipments,” the reports states.
According to the report, the global furniture market is seeing a change in buying patterns in accordance with evolving home and living concepts.
Home style, lifestyle, fashion magazines and blogs are influencing more and more customers. The customers are investing increasingly in remodelling bedrooms in the latest interior design styles and that has made the product replacement cycle shorter.
Akhil Trading, distributor of Istikbal furniture of Turkey and other brands, has reported an annual growth of 25 percent. “The home furniture segment is growing fast as our offerings are of European standard and more durable,” said Akhil Chapagain, chairman of Akhil Trading.
“We first opened our store two years ago. In the first year, we saw satisfactory sales growth. In the second year, the earthquake and trade embargo led to a significant slump and in the upcoming fiscal year we expect the sales to grow by 25 percent.”
According to stakeholders, increasing conviction for foreign brands can be attributed to rapidly evolving lifestyle choices and high demand for ergonomic furniture from foreign manufacturers.

May 23, 2016- As his film “Lawaaris” clocked 35 years of its existence on Sunday, megastar Amitabh Bachchan walked down memory lane. He recalled the moment when he lifted his wife and actress Jaya on one occasion while singing “Mere angne mein” at a live performance.
The actor took to his official blog to talk about the film and the popular song, which still strikes a chord among music lovers.
He shared: “The ‘chhoti biwi’ being lifted for the verse ‘jiski biwi chhoti, uska bhi bada naam hai ... goad mein baitha lo, bachche ka kya kaam hai'... But shows and its formation and its experiences shall be another blog another day ... there is so much on that chapter.”
The actor also shared that he took the stage in New York on being insisted by melody queen Lata Mangeshkar.
The “Paa” star posted: “Lata Mangeshkar asking you to sing a song on her show and how could one ever get out of it, so I did it. The reaction was wild. I never as did no one else imagine that it would have such effect.
“People who for events such as these would sedately sit at respective seats and appreciate the concert, sprung out and landed up on stage and danced with me. New York police department had quite a time controlling it.”
Sharing the idea behind the creation of the song, Amitabh shared: “'Mere angne mein’ scored above all others. It was one that I had heard from my father in the younger days on wedding celebrations and on festivals like Holi. In UP (Uttar Pradesh) folk this was a favourite...And so the song came about.”
Directed by Prakash Mehra, “Laawaris” revolves around an orphan who stumbles over his reality in search for his parents. It also features Amjad Khan, Zeenat Aman and Raakhee.
At present, Amitabh is looking forward to "Te3N" and "Pink".

How much gold is there in London - and where is it?

The Queen inspects one of the gold vaults in the Bank of England in 2012
The world's biggest bank has agreed to buy a vault for gold and precious metals in London. But how many of these vaults are there, and how much gold do they hold, asks Claire Bates?
The streets of London may not be paved with gold, but there is certainly a huge amount stored underneath them. About 6,500 tonnes is stored in seven vault-systems under the city.
The largest by far lies in the Bank of England. It holds three-quarters of the gold in London, or 5,134 tonnes. Most of the gold is stored as standard bars weighing 400 troy ounces (12.4 kg or 438.9 ounces) - there are about 500,000 of them, each worth in the region of £350,000.
But the official reserves of the UK Treasury account for less than a tenth of this.
"Just 310 tonnes of the gold in the Bank of England is from the UK Treasury, the rest is mostly commercial," says Adrian Ash of BullionVault.com.
The gold is held in a system of eight vaults over two floors under Threadneedle Street in the City. This is to spread the weight and prevent the vaults from sinking into the London clay beneath the bank.
There are six smaller commercial vaults inside the M25, owned by banks like JP Morgan and HSBC. Three are around Heathrow Airport.
The vault bought by ICBC from Barclays is one of these vaults within the M25, but its exact location is secret. It holds 2,000 tonnes, making it one of the largest in Europe. It is reported to have taken a year to build.

According to Adrian Ash, a host of private concerns hold gold in London's vaults. "It will be investment funds, hedge funds, wealthy families, trust funds that are backed by gold, that kind of thing," he says.
The Bank of England's vault is the second largest in the world behind only that of the New York Federal Reserve, which holds about 6,300 tonnes.
"London is interesting as it doesn't produce gold or refine it, nor is there much consumer interest. However, it is the centre of the wholesale gold market. It's the fourth-largest importer of gold and the second largest exporter. When you request a price of gold it is given as 'Loco London' - the price of gold delivery in London, which is the baseline," says Ash.
"This is because the UK time zone is between Asia and the US, it has a historic connection to the gold standard and a strong history of property rights, political stability and free trade. It also has good vault facilities."
The Barclays vault bought by ICBC is not thought to have been emptied before the sale.
"My understanding is that it's being bought as a going concern, they haven't just taken over an empty vault," says Ash.
The investors, jewellers, mining companies and others storing their gold in vaults such as these will now pay pay ICBC instead of Barclays for the privilege.
More from the Magazine
Imagine if you were a super-villain who had taken control of all the world's gold, and had decided to melt it down to make a cube. How long would the sides be? Hundreds of metres, thousands even? Actually, it's unlikely to be anything like that size.

Lightning strikes kill 50 in Bangladesh
Ligh
May 14, 2016- More than 50 people across Bangladesh have died after being struck by lightning in the past two days, police say.
Many of the dead were farmers who were killed as they worked in their paddy fields.
Bangladesh is prone to electrical storms but this year they have been particularly severe.
Experts suggest a general rise in temperatures and deforestation may be factors.
Other victims included two students in the capital, Dhaka, who were struck as they played football, and a teenage boy who died when he went to collect mangoes.
About 90 people have been killed by lightning since March, compared to a total of 51 people in the whole of 2015, Voice of America (VoA) reported.
The head of Bangladesh's disaster management body Mohammad Riaz Ahmed told VoA he was "indeed concerned" by the rise in the number of deaths.
He said further thunderstorms were predicted for later this month.
Strong tropical storms regularly hit Bangladesh ahead of and during the monsoon season, which runs from June to September.

Bangladesh Bank heist similar to Sony hack; second bank hit by malware
- Reuters
May 13, 2016- Investigators probing the cyber heist of $81 million from the Bangladesh central bank connected it on Friday to the hack at Sony Corp's film studio in 2014, while global financial network SWIFT disclosed a previously unreported attack on a commercial bank.
SWIFT did not say which commercial bank it was or whether it had lost money, but cyber-security firm BAE Systems said a Vietnamese bank, which it did not name, had been a target. It was not clear if they were referring to the same attack and there was no immediate comment from authorities in Hanoi.
SWIFT, the linchpin of the global financial system, said forensic experts believed the second case showed that the Bangladesh heist was not a single occurrence, but part of a wider campaign targeting banks.
In both cases, SWIFT said, insiders or cyber attackers had succeeded in penetrating the targeted banks' systems, obtaining user credentials and submitting fraudulent SWIFT messages that correspond with transfers of money.

Private medical colleges seek revision to medical education bill
Private medical colleges seek revision to medical education bill
- Post Report, Kathmandu
May 13, 2016- The Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges of Nepal has expressed its reservation over the final draft of the amended bill on National Medical Education Act submitted by Health Profession Education Commission (HPEC) to PM KP Oli on Thursday.
Issuing a statement on Friday, the Association claimed that most of the points in the bill should be reviewed. The Association claims that Nepali students will be deprived of their birth right to study in the country, if the final draft of the bill is not revised.
“The regressive draft that promotes closure of domestic medical colleges and encourages foreign medical colleges in the country is not acceptable to us,” said Association’s President Dr. Bhola Rijal in the statement.
