Olympic Games: World Health Organization to conduct Zika examinationOlympic Games: World Health Organization to conduct Zika examination

Jun 4, 2016- The World Health Organization is to conduct an examination into the risks of holding the Olympic Games in Brazil because of the Zika virus. US Senator Jeanne Shaheen has asked WHO to examine whether the Rio Games could accelerate the mosquito-borne virus. "The Olympics draw people from all over the globe. It's important we understand the health implications," said Shaheen. On Wednesday, Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy said his concerns about exposure to the virus had eased. However, former Masters and US PGA champion Vijay Singh and Australia's Marc Leishman are golfers who have already announced their withdrawal from the Olympics because of worries relating to the virus, which is linked to brain defects in newborn babies. American cyclist Tejay van Garderen, whose wife is pregnant, says he will not compete in Rio. Shaheen has been a leading voice in the Senate calling for action to address the Zika virus. WHO said: "The Emergency Committee is mandated to meet within three months of the last meeting. "The last meeting was 8 March and the June meeting is being planned. As with all Emergency Committees, this one will include reports from affected countries and deliberations about behaviour of arboviruses, the presence of vectors, the capacity of countries to reduce the spread of the disease, and patterns of human travel. "The committee will consider the situation in Brazil including the Olympics." WHO say their report will be made public. Demand for imported furniture on the rise

May 26, 2016- The evolving home and living concept along with the development of modern-style apartment and housing units has led to an increase in the demand for furniture of foreign brands and dealers have reported an annual business growth of 20 percent. Around 60 percent of the furniture offered in Nepali market are imported, according to Kavindra Joshi, president of Nepal Furniture and Furnishing Association. “Foreign brands offer a wide variety of choices at competitive prices and are promoted well than domestic products,” said Joshi. “Moreover, domestic producers face obstacles like power cuts and high cost of raw materials which in turn increase the total cost of production.” Ashish Syangtang, marketing executive at Furniture Land, said the customers are particularly attracted by quality and design of foreign brands like Ashley, Alder, BOFA and others. “Currently, BOFA contributes the highest sales in the sofa segment and brands like In Home and ALDER lead the sales in beds and home decor segments,” he said. Syangtan said such brands are high in demand because they deliver higher comfort and are easy to assemble and move around. “This year, we launched some beds from In Homes and the stock sold out in just three months,” he said. Furniture Land deals with furniture from foreign brands like, Ashley, BOFA, Paradise, ALDER, In Home and JAS. Bristol and Wellington sofas of BOFA are more preferred by offices and households. A five-seater Bristol sofa is priced at Rs115,000 and Wellington sofas cost around Rs285,000. According to a research by Research and Markets, the global bedroom furniture market has been predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.4 percent during the period 2016-2020. “The global bedroom furniture industry is highly fragmented. It is also labour-intensive and includes craft-based local firms and mass volume producers and retailers. With the emergence of flat-pack and ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture, mass production has become viable, allowing for larger quantities of shipments,” the reports states. According to the report, the global furniture market is seeing a change in buying patterns in accordance with evolving home and living concepts. Home style, lifestyle, fashion magazines and blogs are influencing more and more customers. The customers are investing increasingly in remodelling bedrooms in the latest interior design styles and that has made the product replacement cycle shorter. Akhil Trading, distributor of Istikbal furniture of Turkey and other brands, has reported an annual growth of 25 percent. “The home furniture segment is growing fast as our offerings are of European standard and more durable,” said Akhil Chapagain, chairman of Akhil Trading. “We first opened our store two years ago. In the first year, we saw satisfactory sales growth. In the second year, the earthquake and trade embargo led to a significant slump and in the upcoming fiscal year we expect the sales to grow by 25 percent.” According to stakeholders, increasing conviction for foreign brands can be attributed to rapidly evolving lifestyle choices and high demand for ergonomic furniture from foreign manufacturers.

Amitabh Bachchan reminisces 'chhoti biwi' moment

Photo Courtesy: AP May 23, 2016- As his film “Lawaaris” clocked 35 years of its existence on Sunday, megastar Amitabh Bachchan walked down memory lane. He recalled the moment when he lifted his wife and actress Jaya on one occasion while singing “Mere angne mein” at a live performance. The actor took to his official blog to talk about the film and the popular song, which still strikes a chord among music lovers. He shared: “The ‘chhoti biwi’ being lifted for the verse ‘jiski biwi chhoti, uska bhi bada naam hai ... goad mein baitha lo, bachche ka kya kaam hai'... But shows and its formation and its experiences shall be another blog another day ... there is so much on that chapter.” The actor also shared that he took the stage in New York on being insisted by melody queen Lata Mangeshkar. The “Paa” star posted: “Lata Mangeshkar asking you to sing a song on her show and how could one ever get out of it, so I did it. The reaction was wild. I never as did no one else imagine that it would have such effect. “People who for events such as these would sedately sit at respective seats and appreciate the concert, sprung out and landed up on stage and danced with me. New York police department had quite a time controlling it.” Sharing the idea behind the creation of the song, Amitabh shared: “'Mere angne mein’ scored above all others. It was one that I had heard from my father in the younger days on wedding celebrations and on festivals like Holi. In UP (Uttar Pradesh) folk this was a favourite...And so the song came about.” Directed by Prakash Mehra, “Laawaris” revolves around an orphan who stumbles over his reality in search for his parents. It also features Amjad Khan, Zeenat Aman and Raakhee. At present, Amitabh is looking forward to "Te3N" and "Pink".
